The History of Ohio Alpha,
Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity

From its founding until 1915, the Brothers resided at the Bacon Property, which was known as The Terrace. However in 1915, Mrs. Bacon raised the rent, so the brothers decided in April to build a permanent home. By the end of May, Brother Ernest Niemeyer, having had architectural experience, completed the plans for the present house. Land was purchased for a small sum, and construction began that summer after a loan of $7,000.00 was secured from chapter president Frank Fyke’s father, Brothers Allen, Fyke, Niemeyer, and Hunsinger stayed all summer to work on the house and to supervise the work that had to be contracted. A rapid, but efficient construction was undertaken with the remainder of the Brothers working on the house until completion. On Election Day, 1916, the Brothers moved into the house from their temporary quarters in the Trassel Block, (the present location of Ada Hardware and Reichert’s Clothing).
Our house is the oldest and first chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon in Ohio and was the first house built for fraternal use in Ohio.
