1915-1920
The chapter was chartered the same year the college became Ohio Northern University and has been an integral part of life on campus ever since.
”All members and pledges eating at the house shall wear collar, tie and coat to dinner each evening, except for battalion officers who must appear in full uniform.” Most of the battalion officers were from the Naval Unit, as the Brothers rented out any available rooms to the Armed Forces. Room and board for the term was $71.00. Pledges, who were not seniors or residents of Ada, were also expected to live in the house at least one term before they were initiated.
On October 7, 1918, the house passed a rule banning all intoxicating liquor and card playing from the house. Brotherhood meetings were much simpler and yet more formal than they are today. Before every brotherhood the Vice-President led the chapter in prayer. Then, there would be two reports, the Treasurer’s report and the Dining Room Steward’s report.
Going along with the trends of the nation, Ohio Alpha set up a sale of stock or profit-sharing system in May of 1920. The Treasurer issued stock in multiples of at least one share. The Treasurer was allowed to draw upon the stock fund for any expense. A death-fund was also set up, where upon the death of any Brother, his stock could be redeemed (presumably by his family) by the Treasurer.
